“Trees and plants… perceive, relate, and communicate…They cooperate, make decisions, learn, and remember–qualities we normally ascribe to sentience, wisdom, intelligence… The planet has been waiting patiently for us to figure that out…expanding our modern ways …as they complement, build on, and align with Aboriginal roots.”
— Suzanne Simard, Finding the Mother Tree
Ask the river how to see this world
With a mind of water,
Holding the sky in your eyes,
Embracing the stone you stumble over,
Laughing in the face of the rain
As you gather it in–
So that everyone you pass
May quench their thirst
On you.
"If the people forget how to praise God, the trees, moving in the wind, alive and growing, do it. The ocean, rolling in and rolling in, over and over again, does it.”
Nina Baumgartner, Chehalis elder
We are the earth, through the plants and animals that nourish us.
We are the rains and the oceans that flow through our veins.
We are the breath of the forests of the land, and the plants of the sea.
We are human animals, related to all other life as descendants of the firstborn cell.
We share with these kin a common history, written in our genes.
We share a common present, filled with uncertainty.
And we share a common future, as yet untold.
--David Suzuki Foundation, for the 1992 UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

To flower in the rain
Takes such faith--
To expose your tender
Petals to the
Thunderstorm.
Such hope that just one bee
Will fly to you
On its own sodden wings,
Risking everything
So that the fruit within you
Might ripen
And you might do some good
In this world.
